“It’s been sixteen long years and they are fighting again,” said John Wirt, CEO of Square Ring, referring to the signing of the contract for the rematch of Roy Jones Jr. versus Bernard Hopkins. “Unbelievable! This is a fight that Roy has wanted for a long time and I know that Bernard wants his revenge!” It was May 22nd, 1993 when Jones and Hopkins fought for the vacant IBF middleweight title on the undercard of the Riddick Bowe-Jesse Ferguson heavyweight title fight. Jones won on all scorecards with the tally of 116-112 capturing his first title in a long procession of belts ranging from middleweight to heavyweight!
A rematch has been discussed over the years but the holdup was always the demand of Hopkins for the majority of the purse. An unusual agreement was reached that each fighter will receive a 50-50 split but with the stipulation that if a knockout happens, the winner of the contest will receive a 60 percent share with the loser collecting 40 percent. Wirt outlined that Jones-Hopkins II will take place in January or February 2010. The event will be co-promoted with Golden Boy Promotions as pay-per-view event and the site is to be determined. Of course, Jones needs to win his December 2nd showdown against Aussie Danny Green.
